We taste juicy raspberries, bright citrus, and sweet graham crackers. This coffee reminds us of freshly baked tart pastries. This coffee has a silky body and a long sweet finish.

producer iconAbout The Producer

Alejo Castro is the current owner of the well-known and respected farm, Volcan Azul. Alejo carries on his family’s traditions while dedicating himself to elevating the farm’s quality and environmental care. He is responsible for the farm’s advanced drying methods, advanced processing methods, and meticulous soil management. Alejo assesses new varietals annually and continues to advance his coffee quality through ongoing experimentation and innovation.

process iconProcessing

This SL-28 was cultivated from seeds given by Alejo’s friends in Kenya. As this is a natural lot, none of the cherry or mucilage is stripped from the seed prior to processing. This particular lot was dried using patios and the mechanical dryer.

variety iconVariety

SL-28 is among the most well-known and well-regarded varieties of Africa. It has consequently spread from Kenya, where it was originally selected in the 1930s, to other parts of Africa (it is important in Arabica-growing regions of Uganda, in particular) and now to Latin America. The variety is suited for medium to high altitudes and shows resistance to drought, but is susceptible to the major diseases of coffee. SL-28 is notable for its rusticity—a quality meaning that it can be left untended for years or even decades at a time, and then return to successful production. There are SL-28 trees in many parts of Kenya that are 60-80 years old and still productive.
